Internet is almost 40 years old right now and has come a long way. Especially the last 5 years were booming with new techniques to build better, faster and prettier websites. But there are still a lot of things that could be improved, these are some that I could think of..

Internet passport.

We still can't uniquely identify users of the web. If we ever should is a different, more philosophical question, but there are countless area's where it could come in handy. An internet passport would make it possible for site's to identify who you are. Users don't have to register any more, administrators can ban annoying users. Preferences could be exchanged between site's, etc. An internet passport would bring a more personalized internet.

PS: I know the privacy issues the above will bring and that's almost impossible to create it securely.

A better GUI.

Currently we are working with JavaScript and Flash to build more attractive user interfaces. Both have their restrictions, so is Flash making my fans spin like mad (having only a graphics card on my motherboard) and doesn't scale well (I have a big dislike for full Flash site's). Negatives of JavaScript are that's it's hard to write, uncoupled with the back end of the website and sometimes disabled by the browser.

For a better GUI we could use something like Apple's Core Animation build into the modern browsers like Firefox, Opera or Safari. No more hassles and hacks with JavaScript and a better looking, smoother GUI. Hopefully easy to create through libraries in the programming languages of choice.

Conclusion.

This are only two things that could be improved in the future. An internet passport could be a huge threat privacy-wise, but it could also bring us a lot of great things. A better GUI is not only an improvement for developers, less frustration, but also brings the user experience of website's onto a new level.
